Dialogue: Mountain and Water
III.
This work sets “mountain” and “water” in juxtaposition as symbols, exploring the dialogue between stillness and motion, form and flow, permanence and transformation.
The mountain embodies solidity, order, and the deep extension of time, while the water represents movement, creation, and the circulation of vital energy.
The two coexist in contrast yet merge in harmony, reflecting the Eastern philosophical ideal of he er bu tong—“unity in diversity.”
The composition unfolds through three layers of imagery:
I. Form (The Body of the Mountain, The Shape of the Water)
Depicts the visible exterior forms—the contour of the mountain and the flowing lines of the water.
II. Realm (The Shadow of the Mountain, The Heart of the Water) Draws inspiration from the guqin classic Flowing Water (Liu Shui) and adopts the traditional Chinese structural technique of huan tou he wei —“returning the end to the beginning.”
Through cyclical melodic recurrence, this movement portrays the continuous flow of water and the reflective depth of the human heart, symbolizing the fusion of form and force, and the mirroring of the mind within landscape.
III. Force (The Energy of the Mountain, The Current of the Water)
Shifts toward inner dynamism and momentum, expressing propulsion, permeability, and the power of breath.
Dialogue: Mountain and Water is not a mere imitation of nature, but a meditation on existence and perception.
Amid the contours of form, the reflections of realm, and the unfolding of force,
sound becomes breath, and time becomes flow—
until mountain and water reveal themselves as two faces of the same whole.

Mountains attain their substance through stillness; waters find their form through motion.
Inspired by the imagery of Eastern landscapes, this work unfolds a dialogue between form, atmosphere, and momentum. The melody cycles like unceasing water, while the structure returns like the steadfast mountains.
