Biography
Ng Xuan Tyi (黃宣禔) is a Malaysian Chinese composer from Penang. He is currently pursuing an MMus in Theoretical Composition at Chinese Culture University (Taipei, Taiwan), studying with Prof. Wen-Tze Lu. He previously graduated from Communication University of China (Composition & Composition Techniques, Electroacoustic Music) and Chinese Culture University (Theoretical Composition), and also studied conducting with Prof. Paul Tien-Chi Lin, cultivating an integrated perspective between composition and rehearsal practice.
His music focuses on timbral organization and narrative form within contemporary musical language. Spanning chamber music, orchestral works, and electroacoustic creation, his compositions are often inspired by cross-media listening imagination and cultural memory.
In November 2023, his symphonic sketch Mu Ji 《木及》 received First Prize in the Theoretical Composition Division of the Hwa Kang Concerto Competition, premiered at KHS Hall. In June 2024, his vocal chamber work The Reeds 《蒹葭》 was selected as an awardee in the Counterpoint Ensemble Young Composer Selection and premiered at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying), Recital Hall. From September 2024 to January 2025, he studied composition at Yeungnam University in Korea under the Korean Government Scholarship (GKS), mentored by Prof. Lim Ju-Seub (임주섭). In November 2025, his commissioned work Home Is Where the Heart Finds Peace 《此心安處是吾鄉》 was performed in Kluang, Malaysia.
Ng has a diverse arts background: he began piano studies at age four, served as president of a songwriting club in middle school and produced multiple performances, and graduated first in Art Theory from the Art Program of Jitsin Independent High School (Penang, Malaysia). He has long been interested in the intertextual relationships between sound, text, and visual imagery.
